Be Safe this Halloween-10 Safety Tips to Ensure a Happy Halloween!

With all the excitement of the Halloween celebration it is easy to forget about safety. Here are 10 simple tips to ensure a safe and fun Halloween for you, your family and even your family pets.

Safety Tip No.1-Improve your child’s sight range. Use make-up instead of masks. Get creative and use face paint instead. Just remember to put on a little cold cream first, to make clean up easier.

Of course we all know that there are costumes that your child will insist on wearing the matching mask. When the eyeholes are narrow and hard to see through, just make the eyeholes larger with scissors.

Safety Tip No.2-Make your own mask. This is a great opportunity to create something unique with your child. Go to http://hgtv.com, search for Halloween costume patterns.

Safety Tip No.3-Use reflective tape on the outside of the costume. Reflective tape has a sticky backside and can be purchased at most Wal-Mart or fabric stores. Add to your child’s costume to make your child visible while trick or treating.

Safety Tip No.4-Go trick or treating with your children. Dress up with your children. A family that trick or treats together stays together!

Safety Tip No.5-Give each child a flashlight. It will not only light their path, it will make your child visible to oncoming traffic.

Safety Tip No.6-Stay with what you know. Take your children trick or treating in your own neighborhood and stick to houses of friends and family members that you trust.

Safety Tip No.7-Remind kids to stay on the doorstep of the houses they are trick or treating at. They should NEVER go inside. Also remind them to say please and thank you.

Safety Tip No.8-Pay attention to the “Beware of Dog” signs. Remind your children to respect the signs for Beware of Dogs. If there is no material sign, teach your children to recognize the signs of a dangerous dog. Simply don’t enter a yard if the dog is not on a tether or in a kennel.

Safety Tip No.9-Once home from the trick or treating fun, Mom or Dad, check each child’s candy keeping only unopened packaged candy. You can also keep homemade treats from trusted sources.

Safety Tip No.10-Save cavities. This is the time to re-enforce regular tooth brushing. Set rules around how much candy can be eaten and enforce brushing teeth before bed.

Extra Safety Tip No.11-Protect your pet!. Chocolate is particularly harmful for dogs and cats and can be deadly if eaten in large amounts. Keep the candy up and out of reach from your pets.

Take some time this Halloween and really enjoy the fun of celebrating as a family. Get involved with your child’s excitement about the season. Create costumes together and establish a family tradition you will all look forward to in the future.

Bake some Halloween treats together to share with friends and family. You could even create your very own haunted house and invite friends in your neighborhood to enjoy it as well.

Whatever you do for Halloween, rediscover your inner child and have fun!
